The Darebin Overseas Students Association (orDOSA) is a network of international students who live and / or study in the Darebin area. The last couple of years have been great for theDOSA, including participation in cultural programs, movie, music and dance events, workshops and performances, international food making, support and referrals, fun activities and games, a regular social space to hang out and much more!

The Drop In Sessions:

The Drop In sessions are an importantDOSAactivity – they provide a regular chance for international students to come together to hang out, chat, play games, use the internet and take part in workshops or…WELL YOU TELL US!

What the peer leaders will do:

We need a team of peer leaders to design a program of events and run the Drop In sessions during Summer. Drop In activities can range from fun and social activities to workshops or information sessions. Overseas students turn toDOSAfor information about living inAustralia, help with study or personal issues, the chance to enjoy themselves and make friends. Drop In sessions are a way to provide some of these things, and this volunteer position is an opportunity for you to use your imagination and create and lead a great Drop In program for the Summer.

How the peer leaders will work:

The peer leaders will report toDOSA’s project worker, and will receive training / briefing as well as office equipment to work on and appropriate resources. The venue for the Drop In sessions, the Ozone Lounge at Northland Youth Centre, is easily accessed by public transport and is very well equipped with internet and computers, a kitchen area, projectors and screens, a karaoke machine and DJ deck, and arts and crafts area.

Operating Hours for the Ozone Lounge Drop In are:

  • Thursday evenings 6pm to 9pm
  • Sunday afternoons from 3pm to 6pm

Peer leaders will need to commit to regular shifts – not necessarily both shifts each week but at least a confirmed timetable so we know the Ozone Lounge will be staffed at all times.

Who will the peer leaders be:

The peer leaders will be:

  • Overseas students
  • Good planners, organizers and hosts
  • People with initiative, great communication skills, a warm and welcoming personality
  • Responsible, and able to commit to planning and running the Drop In Sessions from December 2011 to February 2012.

Peer leaders will need to complete a Working With Children Check. This is free, and if you don’t have one we can help you get it.

What the peer leaders will get:

  • Great work experience: this will be a fantastic experience for anyone who wants to improve their skills in programming, community development, project coordination, communication, leadership. This is definitely experience you can put on your resume.
  • Peer leaders will receive a Certificate of Appreciation, Thank You letter, and professional reference  upon completion of the Drop In Summer program.
  • Peer leaders will have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped other overseas students have fun, make friends, feel more comfortable living in Darebin and maybe even learn something.
